Has anyone tried this comparison? I was wondering after looking at the spec's for both. I think it's about equivalent but it would be great to have actual user's experience.

Calvin,

I had the SCXL and two Aon 3s as my front 3 speakers for a few months while I saved for my Triton Ones. In that time, I experimented a great deal with my settings and couldn't get things tuned properly.

I initially thought it was my SCXL that was the problem. As an experiment, I switched my speakers around and placed an Aon 3 in the center and the SCXL as my left main speaker and experimented with the sound. My conclusion...the SCXL sounds very much lik a Triton 7 and is clearly better than the Aon 3 in sound quality. The Aon as a center did not sound as good and playing the Aon 3 and SCXL in a 2.0 configuration provided a real time demonstration of the differences. The SCXL was more open, airy, and detailed than the Aon 3. I was also able to isolate the problem I was having and that was subwoofer integration and had nothing to do with the Aons or SCXL.

As a final note, the Aon 3 is a great speaker. They sounded amazing in 2.0 music as well as home theater. I never found them lacking and they sounded great no matter what crossover settings I used or where I placed them. These are the first two-way bookshelf speakers I have ever heard that I could live with indefinitely. The only time I ever noticed a shortcoming is when I put them up against the SCXL simultaneously. You could easily use Aon 3s in all channels of you system and it would sound amazing!

Cheers,

T Cobe

Thank you for the input. You've definitely answered my question. I have a pair of Triton 2's and wondering which center channel I would like to pair to them. I guess now, I have to determine which I like better SCXL or the new SCXXL.

Hi Calvin,
I believe T Cobe has given you a very excellent and insightful answer, as he always does BTW.
He may be the only one who has compared the two speakers you are interested in against each other.
I want to say, first off, I love the Aons! I don't have any, I am like you, I chose the Triton 2s. For me, they are MUCH better!!!!
And I have the SC X as my center channel, with the T2s. I love it. I am SURE I would have put in the SC XL, IF it would have fit my cabinet, but it just would not.
I would have NO hesitation to pair the SC XL with the Triton 2s, if I were you.
Hope this helps, happy listening, you are on the right track.
God Bless,
Wayne

Calvin,

I suspect that the X and the XL will sound very similar. I believe the primary difference will be bass response. Ultimately, it's important to me to have a center channel that can hit the low frequencies because I don't like vocals coming through a subwoofer. They sound muffled, bloated and unnatural coming that way. That made the XL worth the price increase for me but listening preferences vary and the margin between the 2 is narrow. The SCXXL may be an entirely different story...

Cheers,

T Cobe
