Hi everyone,

Happy New Year! We're building a new home and am looking to set up a 5.1.4 system in our media room with 9 ft. ceilings. I currently have a SuperCenter XL and a pair of Triton 7s so am looking to add two pairs of HTR-7000s for height and a pair of MPXs for surround.

In researching the optimal placement of the height speakers, I've come across seemingly conflicting info. My local dealer says to center the height speakers front/back from the MLP. That seems counter to the schematics on the GoldenEar and Dolby Atmos websites which place the rear heights much closer to the MLP.

The schematic attached is the closest I could get to meeting the recommended height speaker angles while still having the rear heights closer to the MLP. Would love any feedback you have on the speaker placement or best practices with the HTR-7000s! Definitely want to get this right the first time - my drywall saw skills are very sub-par =) Thanks in advance!

Hi

That height speaker configuration should work just fine. The 7000's are close enough to the MLP to project as heights.

After setting up, you can adjust relative gain of the front/rear heights to get a good sound balance. (I find that I like to run the rear heights with just a tad more gain to compensate for the fact that our ears are pointing forward.) I.E. as long as the heights are close enough to the MLP to project as heights, you can easily use gain settings to get a good balance IMHO.

Just curious, what will be your bass source?

Have fun and happy listening!

Thanks, Rick - that's really helpful. I didn't know if the angled HTR-7000s have any affect on the optimal placements but I think what you're saying makes sense.

I'm considering upgrading to the Triton One.R's at a future date and was planning to see how the bass is with just those. For this size room, I'm wondering if it'll be enough given how powerful and how many subwoofers there are. That'll hopefully be a 2020 upgrade - I'm pacing myself for the sake of my wallet...and wife =)

Thanks again!
Jimmy

Hi, Jimmy

I think the T1.R’s as a future step would give you loads of bass. Haven’t heard them, but if they’re close to T Ref’s, they’ll be amazing. How will you set up for bass in the interim? Do you have a sub? If not, just be careful of headroom if you use the front T7’s as full range with bass crossed from the other speakers. I’d be tempted to take as much heavy lifting load off the 7’s as I could with lower crossovers on the SCXL, 7000’s and MPX’s, say 60 HZ on each. Just a thought. Maybe 80 HZ crossovers once you go to T1.R’s with their huge bass potential.

Enjoy the ride!! GEt speakers do amazing things.

Looks like a good layout, make sure to locate the MPXs at ear height.
