I'm starting construction of a room addition and for all the reasons most everyone here will understand, I need to install in-ceiling speakers for the AV system. The fronts are an easy choice - put the Invisa HTR7000's in L/C/R - but the rear/surrounds are where I'm looking for the collective wisdom of the group and the moderator to provide some suggestions. For similar aesthetic and budget reasons I'm not planing on putting in 4+ more speakers in the rear to try to get to 9.x.x or 11.x.x so that means I can put two in-ceiling speakers in the back of the room. The thought was to use the MPX as a way to create a more dynamic stage for movies which is the primary purpose of the av in this room. That said, my questions come down to 1) Pros/cons of using the MPX vs. running 5.x.x and just putting in two more HTR 7000's for the rear? 2) If I run MPX, should I wire them separately as different channels to jump from 5.x.x to 7.x.x? 3) Placement and orientation - depending on the answers to the above, what's the reco on placement and orientation? See my hand-drawn layout below. There are of course architectural drawings for the room add, but this is a quick way to draw up what I'm getting at. Thanks in advance!

Update - I'm including a link to the drawing as I'm unable to upload the drawing (I receive a "failed to create attachment directory" notification upon uploading. Link to drawing is here. drive.google.com/file/d/12H-ADC41zd8JsQv...2gI/view?usp=sharing

Hi, Mattboyd33

Just some thoughts.

You quote possible 5 or 7.x.x systems someday. Are you thinking you may want to add height channels someday (the last .x)? Your sketch doesn't describe distances, but if so, and if you have the room to keep the HTR 7000's far enough away from the listening position to project at ear height, then I'd lean towards going with 7000's for the surrounds also so that you have ear level sound all around and preserve any future option to add height channels.

What are you planning on for bass support since none of the speakers you mention are really designed to be full range speakers? A sub would add the dynamic sound you are thinking of using MPX's for also.

Have fun with your project!

Hopefully reading this correctly... HTR-7000 or MPX for surround in the ceiling?

The 7000 as surrounds will work great if you can place them far enough to give good focus. If not, MPX in the ceiling will work well.

Update on this thread. After considering all options, here is the proposed layout.... would love some collective wisdom/advice even if only to validate or confirm the plan. Going to install a 5.1.4 system and as you'll see in the layout, am planning on the following:
1) SPS for L/C/R on the wall.
2) HRT 7000 for the Surround channel
3) 525's for 4 height channels
Haven't nailed down which sub but will have one as shown in the design.

Now, the questions are if folks have recommendations as to the placement or rules of thumb when placing a system like this. There will be a 75" wall-mounted TV and the seating area shown is simply for illustration purposes only and may move closer/farther from the TV. Since this is all-new construction, I'm having the GC / builder frame everything so everything fits properly (i.e. no stud right where I want the center channel, joists in the way for ceiling, etc.).

Any thoughts/feedback/direction based on experience? Could be as simple as "do the 650's instead of the 525's as they'll match the size of the room or your other speakers better". Or advice on placement is hugely appreciated as well.

Pic of the layout can be found here - drive.google.com/file/d/1MjLR8XXyHp1gTF2...hfW/view?usp=sharing

Hi Mattboyd33

It's a bit hard to tell from your sketch, but it looks like the ceiling mounted HTR 7000 surrounds will be close enough to the listening position that they would project at ceiling height rather than ear height??? If so, workable, but not ideal for an Atmos system where all speakers except the heights are best when presenting at ear level. If the 7000's will be in really close, do you have the flexibility, with new construction, to wall mount MPX's at ear level instead? Just a thought. Your proposed layout would certainly work, just a little mixing of ear and height level sound fields, but would still sound pretty darn good IMO. My surrounds are near the rear wall because that's the only location that would work.

Re 525's vs. 650's, yes the 650's would have some more power handling, but either would work. I have HTR 7000 fronts and 525 top rear heights in my set-up, and the 525's do very well. For the extra $50 per speaker for 650's I guess I'd lean in that direction, though either would work. (My 525's were already there from an earlier set-up when they were used as surrounds, pre Atmos.)

Hope that helps. Keep at it, you're gonna' love it!
