I read this article: www.soundandvision.com/content/could-nipper-tell and then took this quiz: www.npr.org/sections/therecord/2015/06/0...u-hear-audio-quality

I did not do well on the quiz! I took the quiz using iPhone earbuds and a Lenovo laptop computer. I should re-take the quiz on the Goldenear speakers.

However, the first article makes a great point about recording and mastering being more important than bitrate. Its like the difference between the camera with the highest pixel count used by an amateur, versus the professional using an off-the-shelf camera. Chances are, the pro picture will look a whole lot better.

That said, I have Spotify and I also have some SACDs. When comparing the two, in some cases, the difference is night and day. In other cases, I cannot tell the difference.

Thanks, Murphy. I may try this out on my Tritons later if I can figure out a way to loop them into the quiz. I picked the 320kbps version the majority of the time through my PC speakers. Not the best source for taking this test.

You're spot on about initial quality of the recording. Garbage in = garbage out! This is even more apparent for broadcast television versus Blu-Rays. Programming never looks or sounds as good over satellite versus Blu-Ray. There is even a significant variance in network broadcast quality. Anything on FOX looks terrible. Their picture and sound is almost always the worst of all major networks.

Cheers,

T Cobe

I failed the quiz using my laptop and apple earbuds. Taking the same quiz many weeks later on the Triton Twos? 5 out of 6 correct! Yeah, baby, that's what I'm talking about - Goldenear!
