Some musicians do an OK job covering a song, and some suck at it.

Here is a not so bad, but not so great cover. This is NOT what I am talking about. Let's just listen to the original thanks:

Then there is the first on my list, take a Beatles song and make it your own, Joe Cocker:

You have any to recommend?????

Hi, Wayne

I agree on Joe Cocker's cover song.

Melissa Edward's Hotel California wouldn't play, "blocked in your country for copyright reasons" it said on the screen. Probably just as well, that's such a signature Eagles song. I've heard instrumental versions, especially acoustic guitar, that sounded nice, but BETTER? Nah.

K. D. Lang did a great job on Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, sounded like she owned it. But I can't get past thinking as I hear it, "Hey, not a bad job at all, but, gee, that's Leonard's signature song".

Some songs have such an artist's stamp on them that it must be hard for any other artist to take them over. Songs like Tears in Heaven, On the Road Again, Hallelujah, Hotel California, Whitney Houston's version of I Will always Love You.

I'll keep thinking ....

Funny Rick, that is the message, or one of them, that I get telling me I cannot watch/listen to Anthem's posts.

No, this does not happen often, and even then it is probably a matter of preference.

I am not counting songs like Private Dancer, written by Mark Knopfler, because I think he wrote it for or at least gave it to Tina Turner to sing. So it might count here:

But speaking of the wonderful Ms Turner:

May be a Fogerty song, and done well by CCR, but if you ask me, Tina owns it!!!

God Bless,
Wayne

Most people would agree that Mariah Carey owns this Harry Nilsson song, right?

Grateful Dead cover so many artists where their performance and overall presentation of the song is preferred - IMO - to the original artists. Of course, this is all subjective, but there are so many songs the GD have covered and versions of those covers that I wouldn't know what to necessarily recommend. Nevertheless, I'll throw out one. Consider the Grateful Dead performing Just Like Tom Thumbs Blues. This is a Dylan cover that goes above-and-beyond any Dylan rendition I've heard.

Interesting that the opposite isn't true. I've never heard a band play an original GD song that sounds better than the GD.
