Let me give one back the other way to Willie Nelson, who sang an old 1930 song by Hoagie Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell, "Georgia on My Mind".
IMHO Willie OWNS it!!!! I have this on his Stardust CD, WOW!!!!!

Thank you Willie,
God Bless,

Great examples, all!

GDHAL, that's a perfect example of a a Willie Nelson written (and sung) song that someone else took over and owned. In Patsy Cline's tragically shortened life, she sure made a stamp on country music. I listened to her version of Crazy for years before even knowing that Willie wrote it. It's always felt like "her song" to me.

There are just some songs that get indelibly stamped as "owned", signature songs, whether written by that singer or not.

So what exactly is the ownership standard here? :) I've always kind of leaned toward the artist that put his/her stamp on that song. Lots of amazing singers never wrote a single song of their own (Elvis, Diana Ross, Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston to name a few), and yet put "I own this" on many songs.

Kudos to those artists who both write and sing, and thanks also to those singers whose singing talent takes some songs written by others and makes new, wholly owned ground. I really admire all those talents, and let's hope in the new world of streaming, all get
rewarded for what they do.

Happy listening! So many great songs already shown on this topic.

Thanks Rick, I don't know what the ownership standard is here, probably just in my mind.
Our your mind, I do think we feel it, realize it in many cases. Though perhaps not all agree, not all feel the same.
That is one thing I would welcome in discussion here.
Or not.
I am just doing this because it is fun and I want to share great music.

Here is one more in the form of a question. "I Shot the Sheriff" was a brilliant Bob Marley song, but covered so very well by Eric Clapton and a host of others. But did Eric "own" it? I don't think so. Anybody else that covered it? I did not put in on the list here because in my mind nobody did it that much better than brother Bob. BUT
I still want to know, if he didn't shoot the deputy, and Eric didn't shoot the deputy, then who did???????

God Bless,
Wayne

Ken Lee here is the OPPOSITE of what I am talking about.
BUT
Even then it still makes my point, people in this video think that she is TRYING to sing a Mariah Carey song, when, as mentioned above, this is obviously her cover of a Nilsson song. Nilsson is a GREAT song writer in my opinion.
Sorry about the language in this one but it is funny and an emotion most of us have felt:

Enjoy,
God Bless,
