Hi Guys,

I have been interested in upgrading my Yamaha AVR which is the RX-A2000, 7.1 channel @ 130 W per channel. Looking at the Marantz AV8801 paired with MM8077 power amp. Also the Yamaha CX-A5000 with the MX-A5000 power amp.
I was reading through my manual and discovered that my AVR has a set of Pre Outs, so I have been thinking to keep my AVR which is in pretty new condition and use it as a Pre Amp. Buy the Yamaha MX-A5000 power amplifier(11.1 channel @ 150 W per channel), plug that into the pre-outs and run my Triton 2's off that. I listen to 2 channel music mostly and hope this will bring out a better sound from my Tritons. I also enjoy bluray movies. I think pairing up the two pieces from the same manufacturer should be a good choice.

Are there any flaws in my plan or is it a good choice. To me it makes sense to go this route and not waste my receiver and I can always upgrade it to the matching Pre-Amp, CX-A5000 at a later date.

Thank you guys. Appreciate any feedback.
Cheers.

I am running my T2s, SS60C and SS3s off an Emotiva XPA-5 amp, which is connected to the preouts of my AVR Marantz SR7005. The addition of the Emotiva to this set up made a significant improvement.

Running the Yamaha RX-A2000 as a preamp connected to a separate amp would work fine. However, after looking at the Yamaha MX-A5000 amp (150 watts) reviews, the term "merely competent" was used, along with, "found it's power output a bit wanting"....red flag? As for the Marantz MM 8077 amp (150 watts)..."Had plenty of power for most situations but had difficulty driving the woofers of some speakers"...red flag?

I'm with Sbhat3 on this one. I think the Emotiva XPA-5 Generation 2 (5-channel--200 watts) might serve your needs better...and at $999.00 you could stick some cash in your pocket.

As for a future processor, the Yamaha CX-A5000 looks most promising. Don't overlook Emotiva's line of processor's... they make great products.

Every great performance deserves an Audience!

Anthem,
Thanks for your response. You have given me something to think about. There is quite a price difference between the Yamaha and the Emotiva. I don't know much about the brand but it seems to be a popular brand on this forum. Honestly I don't need 11.1 channels. I was just looking for a better way to drive my Triton's. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I'm going to search for a review on the Emotiva.
Just hope they will ship to Canada if I go for it.
Will keep you posted.
Cheers.

Another Emotiva recommendation. I am going to search for a review. Thanks for your response. I'm glad I did not go ahead and purchase the MX-A5000.

Cheers

Hi again Fried One and all,
I see you are already getting some good advice here. GREAT.
I just saw this conversation, so am a bit late probably. But going back to your first post, from all accounts the Marantz 8801 is really great stuff. I use the Marantz AV7005 and it is good, but the 8801 is supposed to be in a higher league.
I do not know the Yamahas.
But I agree with Sbhat3 and Anthem, that getting a power amp from a good company that is well reviewed is a GREAT move. Especially as you are really going for 2 channel for the most part it seems, and running the Triton 2s can produce AMAZING sound with the best equipment. They will reward your investment because they can reveal the differences in better quality equipment.
And they are easy to drive, so you don't need mega watts to drive them beautifully.
I would go with pre-outs for now, a better quality amp, and see what improvements that gives. And then later down the road, you can upgrade the front end as well.
Hope this helps,
All the best, happy listening,
God Bless,
Wayne
God bless the child that's got his own.
